Kyu Sakamoto recorded and released ' Ue O Muite Aruko' in 1961 in Japan, it topped the chart for 3 months and was the best seling song in Japan in 1961.
The song was picked up for the western market and renamed 'Sukiyaki'. The literal translation was 'I Look Up As I Walk', 'Sukiyaki' is actually a beef dish in Japan. It reached #1 in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Norway, #2 in Germany and #6 in the UK.
Selling an estimated 10,000,000 copies worldwide making it elling songs of all time.
Kyu was sadly killed on 12 August 1985 in the Japan Airlines flight 123 crash along with 519 others, this remains the largest single aircraft loss of life ever.
