Description
The original Kingston Trio of Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard perform their rousing version of a 19th century Irish-American music hall number about a hapless sailor who is ensnared in the wiles of a lady of the streets. The KT performs a somewhat sanitized reading of the original song, as arranged by the great folk singer and actor Burl Ives, who edited out some of the more explicit details of the encounter.
This cut is from the Trio's second album "...from the Hungry i," which was released just prior to the breakout success of the single "Tom Dooley" from the group's first album.
The song was included recently in the soundtrack of Martin Scorsese's film "Gangs of New York" as performed by Finbar Furey and has also been covered in versions available on YouTube by Oysterband, Steeleye Span, The Dusty Buskers, and The Chilly Winds.
