Robin sent me these lyrics last week. He'd written them 16 years ago after reading an article about another child being killed on the roads, but hadn't been able to find the right melody/accompaniment.

As a mother, not the easiest words I've ever had to work on but as with all Robin's writing, a pleasure to be entrusted with!

This is the 6th Rendell/McCrystal collaboration 😊

The lollipop lady and the green man in the light
Said it was safe to cross, said I’d be alright.

Verse 1
I didn’t know that cars could fly
That they could sing and dance
It only took a second, mama
I didn’t stand a chance
Left, then right, then straight for me
I ran so fast, too slowly
Four wheels flying through the air
Ended up below me

Bridge
The cat’s eyes are full of tears
For the highway’s broken code
One more bunch of flowers dies
Before the child grows old
One last chance to say goodbyes
Before the story’s cold
One more future disappears
One more for the road

Lunchbox, school bag, apple for Miss
