This song is inspired by the Old Norse myths of Jörmungandr, also known as Ormr Miðgarðs — the Serpent of Midgard.
According to the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, Jörmungandr is one of the monstrous children of Loki and Angrboða. Cast into the sea by Odin, the serpent grew so vast that it encircled the entire world, biting its own tail beneath the ocean’s waves.

He is fated to rise from the depths at Ragnarök, the doom of the gods, when he will unleash poison, clash with Thor, and bring the end of the world as it is known.

In the song, the serpent is called Ormr Miðgarðs rather than Jörmungandr, because Ormr Miðgarðs (literally “The Serpent of Midgard”) is the more poetic, descriptive Old Norse name that appears in the sagas. While Jörmungandr means “Great Monster,” Ormr Miðgarðs ties the being directly to Midgard, the human world it encircles — evoking the cosmic imagery of the world-serpent wrapped around creation.

The lyrics are written in Old Norse, echoing the language of the Viking Age, calling forth the serpent in chants that mirror the apocalyptic visions of the seeress in Völuspá.

Ormr Miðgarðs embodies the eternal cycle of destruction and renewal — the serpent that sleeps in the deep, destined to awaken.
